Alcohol and Drug Issues in Hospitality and Tourism & Hospitality Equality! Two Fantastic Speakers for Hospitality!
Students of the Contemporary Issues in hospitality module
have always enjoyed visits from excellent speakers. This year was no different
with guest lectures from two colleagues and friends of Hospitality who have
worked tirelessly in their careers to make a difference.
First up was Ken
Crosland, (http://www.hospitalityaction.org.uk/
) bringing a wealth of life time experience on one of the biggest issues we are
still facing in hospitality management.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse is a hospitality plague that far too often goes
unnoticed until it is too late. Ken gave
a personal account of his own experiences but also gave real tools and
techniques to enable young people not only avoid falling into the pitfalls
themselves but also help others. For more information and how to get help for your organisation see: http://www.hospitalityaction.org.uk/what-we-do/alcohol-drug-awareness-seminarspresenter/http://www.hospitalityaction.org.uk/what-we-do/alcohol-drug-awareness-seminarspresenter/
Our second guest Speaker was Tricia Barnett ( www.equalityintourism.org ) who
talked about gender equality issues in tourism and hospitality and managed to
engage students in a heated and passionate debate. Tricia also talked about her
latest fundraising project https://chuffed.org/project/equalityintourism
She and her team are trying to raise funds to support 30 Tanzanian women farm
for their future. If you think this a project worthwhile of your support please
do visit https://chuffed.org/project/equalityintourism
and donate no matter how little.
After the guest speakers departures our students continued debating with amongst themselves and with me and I must admit that we were all engrossed in the storytelling, approach and delivery of both speakers. Both Ken and Tricia, gave us more than just food for thought, they gave us food for action!
Two student teams have pledged to help raise funds for each charity
and I have pledged to support and mentor them through out this effort.
Our Undergraduate and Postgraduate
courses in hospitality regularly feature guest speakers and field trips to hospitality
organisations.
