Sometimes as an educator you get to develop modules that showcase the very best of what students can do and I am happy to say that this has happened many times in my career. One of the modules that I have developed that I most enjoy facilitating for students is called Hospitality Consultancy. It is a final year module that utilises problem based learning and peer assessment as part of the learning platform. I find it exhilarating to see the student development from the early stages of frustration when they do not know what to do with an almost "clean canvas" of learning.
This module is NOT about learning consultancy skills, it is about identifying what skills students have so far developed that can be used for consultancy and putting them to the test, thus allowing students to identify the key areas that they need to focus to improve themselves by the time they graduate and be far more employable. Consultancy skills such as problem solving, communicating and innovative thinking are not just needed if you are a consultant, they are needed throughout any hospitality career.
This is a video produced by one of my student groups in my Hospitality Consultancy classes. Groups of students met with the Client (in this case Wrapid) and they had to research the areas that the client briefed them to research and then produce a video of under 10minutes that highlights the key issues for the company.
The videos are not meant to be overly conclusive as the team members must then produce individual reports at the second stage of the Hospitality Consultancy module. Students had complete freedom with the creative input for their videos so I often do not have a clue as to what to expect. Here this video is shown after permission was given by both the company and the video creators, as an example to other students. Really proud that this module had 98% attendance and a great number of high achieving students (in fact no one of that cohort failed the module).
A great little elective that challenges students way of thinking and puts all the skills they have learned throughout their years of study to the test. Special thanks to http://www.wrapid.com/ and Jean-Pierre, Ramzi and Matthias for allowing me to showcase this video.
Note: If you are a hospitality company that is interested in working with us, let me know we offer free consultancy to those that are willing to give us access and some of their time. Please note that I receive about 10 requests a year from companies and I carefully select companies based on what I think will be a great educational experience for everyone involved including the client.
